Executive Producer and Narrator Jordan Peele’s reboot of Rod Serlings’ 1959 sci-fi television series “The Twilight Zone” re-imagines some of the classic episodes from the original series and also adds some new storytelling that addresses the current social climate. An example of this commentary through storytelling was featured in a recent episode of the series starring Sanaa Lathan and Damson Idris who stars in “Snowfall” on FX. During a recent Q&A regarding the episode, Sanaa Lathan talked about how she plays a mother who accompanies her son (Damon Idris) on a road trip to his first day at college. The story artfully addresses the issues of racial inequality and police brutality in a way that is incredibly clever and entertaining. The episode can be viewed on CBS All Access.

On Thursday, April 11, 2019 the life of Nipsey Hussle (Ermias Joseph Asghedom) was celebrated during a Memorial Service at the Staple Center in Los Angeles, CA. Thousands packed the Staple Center while many more watched the televised service from home. In attendance were notables including Beyonce’, Jay-Z, Snoop , and Stevie Wonder. During the service, a letter from President Obama was also read acknowledging Nipsey Hussle’s efforts to inspire and empower his community by creating businesses and jobs in the Crenshaw area where he lived and where he was tragically shot and killed outside of his Marathon clothing store on March 31, 2019 at the age of 33.
My introduction to Nipsey Hussle, the music artist and community activist, began about two years earlier at a screening of filmmaker Ava DuVernay’s Netflix documentary entitled “13th” which also included a panel discussion moderated by Ava DuVernay including Nipsey Hussle as a panelist. I initially wondered what the young man would offer to the conversation about racial inequality in America and soon learned that Nipsey Hussle was not just a music artist, but also an humanitarian who was dedicated to being a positive contributor to his community. I wrote an article for Huffpost.com about the screening and panel and included a quote from Nipsey Hussle. When asked by DuVernay how he could get more young people involved in social change, Nipsey Hussle responded that content creators need to “let young people know that we have the power to create what we need.” Nipsey Hussle did just that by creating businesses in his community and hiring people of color in his community. Before his death, Nipsey Hussle was schedule to meet with the Mayor of Los Angeles’ office and other community leaders about how to bring about positive social change in Los Angeles. Hopefully, his mission will continue and his life efforts will not be in vain. May the Marathon Continue.

“Little” starring Regina Hall, Marsai Martin, and Issa Rae is a laugh out loud hilarious story of a women (Regina Hall) who transforms back to her 13-year-old self (Marsai Martin) as she learns valuable lessons about humility, friendship, and self-discovery. Marsai Martin, who is best known for portraying Diane on the ABC television series “Blackish” not only stars in the film, but made history as the youngest Executive Producer of a Hollywood film.
The cast of “Little” have great chemistry, particularly Marsai Martin and Issa Rae who demonstrate fantastic comedic timing in every scene that they share. Regina Hall also delivers as the self-consumed and “impossible to please” boss opposite Issa Rae’s character who is her assistant. Other notable cast members include Justin Hartle (This is Us/ABC) and Luke James (Star/FOX).
“Little” is directed by Tina Gordon, who also co-wrote the script with Tracy Oliver who is best known for writing the box office hit film “Girls Trip” also starring Regina Hall, along with Jada Pinkett-Smith, Queen Latifah and Tiffany Haddish. Director Tina Gordon also directed “Peeples” starring Kerry Washington and wrote the films “Drumline” and “ATL.” During a screening and q&a of “Little,” Gordon talked about the joy of being able to direct and co-write the film. “There is no gap between what you intend as a writer and exactly what you see,” she said, “it’s exactly the movie you intend in your mind.”
“Little debuts in theaters nationwide on Friday, April 12.
